How it all started
In 2021 surfer and filmmaker Kale Brock began a deep dive into the world of surfboard shapes, conducting a series of tests comparing the world's most high performance surfboards.
Indeed, he found some great crafts, but the elephant in the room was that most of the surfboards Kale tested were simply inappropriate for the every day surfer.
As a surf coach hosting retreats around the world, Kale was seeing the same problems pop up for surfers again and again.
They couldn't catch waves easily on their shortboards but didn't like the lack of manoeuvrability on a long board.
"I'd be watching my students and I'd imagine them being able to paddle around the line up on a long board and then right as they caught the wave, somehow switch over to a shortboard.
Obviously that wasn't possible so I started tinkering with some designs and testing some mid lengths, an apparent solution to this omnipresent problem. Nothing quite hit the mark.
There were shapes out there that were swayed too heavily in either direction; they were too thinned out and 'performancey' meaning to achieve enough volume a surfer would have to choose a 7'6 or something. Or, on the flip side, they were too beefed up and really unresponsive - the surfer may as well have been on a foamie or longboard.

It took me a long time to come up with the right shape that balanced this need for easy, effortless paddle and wave catching, against the need for high performance once up and riding.
We created a team of experts behind the project and I was really hard on them. We had to create the world's best mid length surfboard - no doubts or almosts, I had to feel confident that it paddled like a long board and surfed like a short board. After three years of R&D we got there, and I'm so excited to release these shapes to the world under my own banner.
As a coach I have unique insights as to how surfboards are functioning in the every day surfer market, and right now there's a lot of work to be done because many people are still on sub-optimal crafts.
It took us a long time to develop the KBD performance mid, and as we continue our rigid R&D process on further shapes, we'll always be thinking about the end-user. Our boards will all be designed with you in mind and I can't wait for you to get more from surfing by riding them."
